New Arena Approved in Virginia Beach

Just because Virginia Beach is looking for an NHL team to be a major tenant doesn't mean they're going to get one.

As with any city looking for the same thing. I can see Quebec, Seattle, or even Hartford getting a team before Virginia Beach does.

It's a plenty big enough place

450k close

1.2M by region

Like Hartford I don't know who the buyers are though?

Virginia Beach is about halfway between DC and Raleigh (each just over 200 miles away). My question would be support of a team...Washington does fine with the Caps of course, but we know about Raleigh's struggles...would a 3rd team in that area be one too many?

Speaking of arenas, I see Seattle is going to go through with the KeyArena renovation instead of Chris Hansen's deal...you guys think Hartford doesn't know what the he!! they're doing when it comes to arenas/stadiums...check that out.

That Key Arena is something else. When they proposed the plan they got a ton of return tweets and the number one concern was that traffic to the Key Arena was horrible 20 years ago.

Seattle should be embarr*****ed to be sitting this long at Hartfords NHL interest level

Virginia wouldn't work with Raleigh and DC but could provide a soft landing spot for the hurricanes while also allowing the league to not have a whole on their TV coverage map.

Mayor/Governor Ganim will have the connections with his friend President Trump, will have a major say during the next few years as Governor, will also have help from Senator Fasano from downstate, I don't see how Virginia Beach will be able to compete with Bridgeport, 15 minutes from Fairfield County, and Connecticut has several wealthy private investors lined up, the pitch will be that for northern Connecticut to have a casino, some of that revenue will need to go to a new arena for southern Connecticut and the Bridgeport entertainment district, especially with Hartford just receiving a new baseball stadium, Mayor/Governor Ganim and Fasano are opposed to allowing Hartford to receive two new/renovated sports projects, without Bridgeport getting any.

That is a very interesting thought. I can see that playing out...if nothing more than temporary.

Still, the next city to get an NHL team will be Hartford.

Not to mention there is no way the NHL is going to allow another NHL team to move into the New York area. The Islanders are staying on Long Island, the Devils and the Rangers certainly are not moving, so Wolfie thinks there will be four NHL teams down there?

Wolfie, wanna buy a bridge? Better yet, get your Governor Ganim to build that long-rumored bridge from Bridgeport to Long Island. You can have a special lane for team buses and fans going back and forth from an Islanders game to NHL game in Bridgeport. (Think of the greatness during home-and-home series.) We can call it the Wolfie Lane! Yeah, there we go.

VA Beach or Hartford is not getting a team in the near **ture. VA Beach is between the Hurricanes and DC Markets and is not a hockey Market. The same issues obviously have faced Hartford given no new arena and being very close to Boston and New York.

And to top all this off is the uneven conferences that make outside quebec a new team coming east via expansion or relocation slim to none.

I agree with you on the expansion part, but the balance of conferences won't be changed, if, let's say, Florida or Carolina relocated along the east cost.

Or if the Islanders move...I'd love the Canes move back to Hartford...

They most likely never will, but that would be the most gratifying thing ever

That's why Peter will never sell the team to people who would relocate the Canes to Hartford. He shouldn't got the team, but Weicker gave it to him.

Very true, my dad said that Weicker was really the person who should be blamed for them moving. There was a local group that wanted the Whalers, but one of the guys was not a fan of Weicker...

Absolutely. I blame him more than anybody. The Fat Slob let Karmanos have the team in exchange for his placement on Compuware's board of directors. That's why the louse did not run for re-election. Why this was never investigated I'll never understand. In any case, that piece of sh!t should be stopped at the border and never be allowed back into our state.

I'm actually surprised that there never was an investigation into corruption or something, given the fact that there was a local owner willing to buy and stuff like that

I've always believed that Rowland took something under the table to let the team out of their lease.  Not that hard of a stretch considering Rowland has been in jail twice now for similar type offenses
