Governor visiting XL Center TODAY, NHL official meeting??

50 posts in this topic

A few takeaways from the press conference / tour:

Malloy is 100% favoring a renovation, a renovation has big cost savings.  I knew from the start that SCI would be there today, they were preselected by the NHL to do renovations at hockey venues, very promising sign, the workmen were there and briefly slowed down their work to reduce the noise from interfering with the press conference (they kept the Bobcats and excavator off for most of the time).

In order...

"Malloy is 100% favoring a renovation, a renovation has big cost savings"

No kidding, he's been saying that from the start.

" I knew from the start that SCI would be there today, they were preselected by the NHL to do renovations at hockey venues, very promising sign, the workmen were there and briefly slowed down their work to reduce the noise from interfering with the press conference"

SCI is there every day, dumba$$.  Bob Saint works for SCI.

Maybe we can get some info from a person that was actually there and not pretending.  Evo, what did you find out?

No, Robert Saint works for the CRDA, the Development Authority.

SCI is an architectural firm from NYC, with much experience in large venues, especially  NHL venues.

I heard Robert Saint say at one point, and I never heard this before, is that code requires so many bathrooms for the capacity, if the capacity is to be increased by one-thousand to two-thousand people, a 10% or so attendance increase, then there needs to be a 50% increase in the amount of bathrooms at the arena, because as capacity standards are now, the arena is already lacking a large number of bathrooms.

Also, CCSU might be exploring using the XL Center for some men's basketball games in upcoming seasons, they have been using it as a graduation venue for the past few years, and with the busway now almost reaching the XL Center's doors since the buses do leave the dedicated busway and p***** by the XL's front doors, it makes sense for them to explore more use of the arena.

My CCSU graduation was held in the building in May 1997...literally a few weeks--if that long--after the Whalers banners were originally taken down and the logos removed from everywhere inside. At what was supposed to be a jubilant moment for me, I couldn't' help feeling the hate looking up at the rafters and seeing nothing to show the Whalers were playing there just a month ago.

I stand corrected.  Saint is the head of construction for the CRDA.

But I do know SCI is there frequently.  Much more than the once in a blue moon that Wolfie implies.

Again, if Evo is around and could provide a true take of what happened today, it would be appreciated.

Bob Saint Dir of CRDA Construction was there

Murray Beynon Head of SCI was there

Chris Copley Malloy's Chief of Staff was there

Micheal Friemuth was there Dir of CRDA

Kim Hart was there Dir of CRDA Venues

As always the media was negative some questions were unrelated to XL.  The WFSB lady is not friendly at all. She definitely looked at us like we were in a clown car.  Which we were to some extent.  I had a bright yellow NEw England Whaler tie on. LoL

Max from NBC 30 interviewed Jerry and I it wasn't a cheer leading squad at the presser but you saw the XL floor and it looked like utter crap.

Starting with Max, I thought the scolding about the yawn was a bit undeserved, I thought the questions from Susan (channel 3) were fair.  One of the best points made was that a 2nd concourse would make the facility a safer place for a large amount of people to be.

On the topic of Susan, she goes to the same gym as the wolf pack players do, she is at Champions in Cromwell working out routinely, she might have a water retention health issue as noted by her arms and skin folds, so exercise is important to her, I have always found her to be professional.

Chris Collibee Malloy's Press Secretary was there.  I can't edit any posts in this new format.

the bathroom issue is huge compared to normal arenas everywhere XL has the lowest restroom count by far and that's simply because they didn't add any on and originally it was restrooms for 10509 not 15,635. In Hockey arttendance terms

Not going to lie. I was hoping for more. I mean, I wasn't expecting people from NHL headquarters to be there. I wasn't expecting possible NHL owner to be introduced. But I was hoping there would be new details to announce and talk about. Maybe news and details about talks with possible NHL owner at least going on. Maybe news and details about people or companies willing to invest private money into XL center renovation. Instead it was just rehashing of what we already know: governor supports renovation plan that he has already introduced and he wants Ct general *****embly to approve the bonding of amounts he has already asked for to renovate Xl center. Problem is that there is no word out there that indicates general *****embly members in Ct house and senate are as supportive of Xl center renovation plan as Malloy is. Problem is that there is no word out there that general *****embly members are supportive of bonding the amount of $$$ that Malloy has asked for for Xl center reno. Problem is that there is no word out there that Ct voters are gung ho for state government to bond the money that Malloy has asked for to reno XL center and no word out there that Ct voters are putting pressure on general *****embly members to back Malloy's plan for Xl center.

I just talked to my dad on the phone and he says that this press conference was not a good sign for Malloy and his Xl center plan. My dad says that it seems like Malloy is just treading water. My dad says he is hearing from political clients that there is no momentum growing in general *****embly to give Malloy entire bonding amount he wants. And my dad says that without something big like interested potential Nhl owner who is willing to step up & identify himself or without business people & companies willing to announce they will invest private money in Xl renovation, he doesn't think momentum is just going to appear out of nowhere. My dad also thinks it is not a good sign that CRDA is just now getting around to sending out RFPs and RFQs for private investment in Xl center reno. He is hearing from political clients that general *****embly members are grumbling that Malloy and CRDA should have been looking for private $$$ to partner with state on Xl center project right from the start because state economy is in such tough shape. My dad thinks that Malloy is going to need something really big to develop to get general *****embly on board with his Xl plan, but based on what he heard from Malloy today he doesn't think Malloy has anything big up his sleeve.
It could be time to start praying for a miracle.

Wow I walked that same day and felt that exact same way. Top of my cap was a huge Whaler symbol.

I have to be totally, absolutely frank and blunt about this....and I know many of you have issues and concerns with Malloy for a variety of reasons, respect that. HOWEVER, I think Malloy did a FANTASTIC job during this press conference, told the absolute truth and many media didn't want to hear it. Couldn't internalize the core of the issues, how vital this all is to Hartford. Hartford matters. It's all connected.

and he says with a wink

"I know who you are."

im half and half can't figure out if they're desperate to get help to p***** it or if they are just covering bases to keep it in the  news.

look SCI was there but make no doubt they weren't there for a 30 min PC

thwre  were meetings and while I didn't see it myself I did get a source confrimimg NHL attorneys were here Wednesday.

But no news and that lawyer stuff seems to happen a lot with no development.

Any truth to the rumor of there being a meeting/dinner back at the Governor's Mansion yesterday between the Governor, CRDA reps, SCI, NHL officials, casino reps, Uconn President/officials, and reps from Springfield high-speed rail??

If the old fashioned, clueless, old white men morons who occupy the bulk of our legislation can't see the forest from the trees on this issue and fix that building, the entire state will become a destitute wasteland. No millennial will ever entertain the idea of staying here for a career, no industry would move here (unless we increased the deficit by giving some incentive laden "free ride"), and other young to middle age professionals like myself will probably pack up and hit the road. I love my home state but I am getting increasingly frustrated with the super conservative, no vision enabled government that keeps us all mired in knee deep mud. Think progressive.

I can't say truth but I was told NHL was here just not at PC.

and personally I know there is no way in **** the State flew in the top br***** of SCI simply to sit behind him and listen to a 45 minute PC.  There was definitely some business meetings going on.  Maybe it was related to the new ice sheet maybe it was related to next phase plans but something went on last week
