is Vince McMahon bringing back the XFL, with a "Whalers" team ?

Recommended Posts

Is Vince McMahon rebooting the XFL? The rumors are flying after word came down that McMahon is **nding a new venture, Alpha Entertainment. It’s the latest move in what has been a big month for WWE, which unveiled a new tournament exclusively for Facebook and an announcement about WWE Studios preparing to ramp up digital and television production.

Sure, it’s a little surprising that there are rumors about the return of the XFL. But despite this, it should come as no surprise that we’ve got some ideas of what a new and improved XFL should strive to do in the event it is indeed coming back.

Teams in New Markets

While it’s important to throw teams in the mega-markets like New York and Los Angeles, the new XFL should have some **n with attempts at being the squad to cheer on in some smaller markets. The Mexico City Aztecs, the Austin Bats, the Hartford Whalers (which, potential trademark issues aside, would own).

There’s also cities with only one team that has room for another. Could an XFL squad work in Portland? San Antonio? Maybe Orlando? And if the XFL wants, it could go completely bonkers and have teams like…the Atlanta 28ers.

I am not sitting down, standing, just like I was at Muzzy Field, when you ran away.

Too late. You hurt your brain, Frank. Can you still find your Sonar bobblehead, or is that worn out?

It would be interesting to say the least. I just think it would end up like it did before, and like every other league that retired to compete with the NFL. Even if it did get started, there's no way the NHL would let there be a team called the Hartford Whalers. They own the copyright and are making millions from it, no thanks to the state for letting that lapse.

the XFL (Whalers football team) could be playing at the new Dillon Stadium if construction begins soon.

I see that there is a big IF in your statement!

I thought soccer was going to be there?!?!?!

But who cares about soccer?!?!?

Soccer has to be there considering they're paying for all the upgrades to the stadium. Without the soccer team the place would either need another investor or would have to be torn down.

According to CBS Sports, McMahon will will announce the return of the XFL — almost 17 years after the first and only season was played in the league. According to a news release sent to the Orlando Sentinel, the announcement will be made at 3 p.m.

Orlando was one of the eight cities that fielded teams in the original XFL. The Orlando Rage, who finished with the best record in the league at 8-2, were joined by the Chicago Enforcers, the New York/New Jersey Hitmen, the Birmingham Thunder, the Los Angeles Xtreme, the San Francisco Demons, the Memphis Maniax and the Las Vegas Outlaws.

Orlando officials have not spoken to the WWE about a team playing in Orlando, Mayor Buddy Dyer spokeswoman C*****andra Lafser said, but added “this is something we would be interested in learning more about to bringing to Orlando.”

So let's see...

If Hartford is on Vince McMahon's list...and the XFL plays in the spring/summer, they'll be going head-to-head with the Yard Goats, who only drew more people to Dunkin Donuts Park than any franchise in the 45 years of minor league baseball in Connecticut.

If Hartford is on Vince McMahon's list...and the XFL plays in the fall, they'll be going head-to-head with not just the NFL, but with UConn sports as well.

I'm all for more events at Rentschler, but I do not believe minor league football (and let's be fair, that's exactly what this is) will make it here.  Or anywhere else for that matter.

I'd like to see the Hartford Whale play from March to June, with playoffs starting in late June, before NFL training camps open.

Whether they would play at Hartford's Dillon Stadium, or play in East Hartford such as the Hartford Colonials did would obviously have to be decided upon in the next few months.

They'll play at Rentschler.  Dillon...if/when it gets done...is going to be too small.  The only other option that is even remotely possible is Veterans Memorial Stadium in New Britain, but even that only holds like 9,000 or so.
