RUMOR from Legislative Building: Islanders stopped East Hartford outlet construction

Recommended Posts

It seems that we finally have an answer as to why the East Hartford outlet construction suddenly came to a halt.  We first got word on the Outlets in East Hartford back in 2013 and 2014 when Horizon Properties mentioned they were looking at the Rentschler Field property as a suitable location for outlets.  In the year 2015, Horizon wanted the Outlets to open in 2016, but planning took longer than expected and the 2016 came and p*****ed.  Horizon then sat down with East Hartford town leadership and crafted a tax deal and in October of 2017, there was an official groundbreaking for the East Hartford outlets.  Just days later, in November, all construction came to a halt.

It begs the question, why after over four years of planning, did construction get halted just days after the official Ground Breaking, what news did Horizon Properties get during that two-week phase after the groundbreaking that they were not aware of during the four years of planning and town tax discussions which predated the Groundbreaking?

We are now hearing the real reason, there is talk of a Mixed Use arena being built at the East Hartford site, and if that is the case, land that Horizon was going to lease from UTC would then need to be leased by the arena owner, with Horizon leasing a smaller portion in which it could locate shoppes and restaurants.  Horizon is keeping construction equipment on site for the very purpose of building either the originally proposed outlets, or a new revamped outlet plan (bordering an arena) if the Islanders do make the move.  I am hearing that construction equipment will remain on site until about April, as Horizon hopes to have a better outlook on the **ture by then.

Now wait a second Frank, slow down here for a minute. We don't want any injuries. First, before we paint the Islanders logo in East Hartford,  I want to know when the Hartford Wolf Pack are going to become the Connecticut Whale again, which you were "hearing" last week. What are the people you know saying about that?

It appears that it will be the Hurricanes moving to Hartford, the Hurricanes have new ownership and the XL Center should be ready by then, after the next installment of renovations, things are looking up.

Frank, stop.

Carolina isn't going anywhere as long as Karmanos owns a percentage of the team.  And...as everybody tried to tell you...it wasn't going to be the Islanders, though there still might be a small chance they could play here on a short term basis.

If anybody is moving here...it's the Coyotes.  I keep trying to tell you that...but you and the rest don't listen.
