Hurricanes new ownership exploring wearing Whalers jerseys for some games

Recommended Posts

This is big, the new Hurricanes owner knows the team needs a new direction, the Hurricanes are now playing Br***** Bonanza during home games and are now exploring the possibility of starting to wear Whalers jerseys for some games, perhaps testing out if a **ll rebranding back to the Whalers brand would be best for the team in the near **ture.

You know what to do boys, get over to this poll from WTNH-8 and vote as many times as you can.

(WTNH)–The Hartford Whalers are coming back! Well, kind of.

New Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon told ESPN Radio in Raleigh, North Carolina, that he plans on using the old Hartford Whalers logo, which despite the 21-year absence of the Whale, remains one of the most popular merchandise sellers in the NHL.

You do realise that if he's doing this then that means it's less likely that if we do get a team that it can't be called the Whalers. He's not moving them here and if he has the rights to use the Whalers beans for his team, then there's no way the Whalers will ever be in Hartford again. This is not a good thing at all.

I totally disagree.  First of all...Dundon has proven in two weeks of owning the team that he has a lot more business savvy than PK ever did.  Using the Whalers brand, quite simply, is good business.  Yes, people will be upset, I totally get that...but if he has the rights (for now) to use the logo/colors, why not, especially if it's going to mean more coin in his pocket?  Second...if using the Whalers brand/colors by the Canes means even MORE sales of the merchandise, and MORE publicity for Hartford and our lobbying for a franchise, that's also a good thing.  Third...just the mere mention that Dundon is planning on doing this has given Hartford publicity...read the ESPN article that has a link to the HWBC's Rapid Response Force.

Again, this is GOOD for Hartford...not bad...it gets the word out that we're serious about getting a team.  There's still obstacles...but any publicity for Hartford trying to get a team back is good...not bad.

Baldwin Sr told me many moons ago that the state has a card to play in regards to the logo.  After all PK signed an agreement to leave logo with the state

They no longer have that agreement. They let the copyright lapse, and it went back to the NHL. A bunch of people wrote articles about this back when new Whalers shirts and hats started being sold years ago.

Many people are seeing this as a gradual goodbye to North Carolina, first they start playing Br***** Bonanza, a few weeks later they start to slowly introduce the Whalers jerseys for some games, over time it will be for more games until a **ll rebranding takes place, Carolina have consistently been in the bottom 5 of the league for attendance, Carolina will spend maybe 1 or 2 more years in Carolina and then they will move to Hartford if the Coyotes haven't beaten them to it, Coyotes are in even worse financial shape with a worse attendance record.

You won't see Whalers jerseys this season...I'm sure the league will team up with the company that designs the NHL jerseys (want to say it's Adidas, but I can't remember for sure) to make the jerseys, and that will take time.  I'm sure nothing is off the table for next season, maybe they'll make the Canes 3rd jersey a Whaler spinoff, but that's up to the league and the team.

They're not rebranding either, and they're certainly not rebranding to the Whalers, that would cause a complete uproar among what few fans they do have down there.

Last, they were saying last night that the lower bowl of PNC Arena seats roughly 12,000 people.  The ENTIRE XL Center seats roughly 14,500 for hockey, give or take, and even a completed renovation won't bring the lower bowl here to 12,000 people...probably not even close.  I keep telling you, Frank....focus on the Coyotes.

Correct but I talked to Baldwin after all of that.  They still have a card to play

Something really big is going on, for the league and owner to now want to bring back Whalers jerseys into the NHL, just days after the State of Connecticut releases the Whalers license plates.... the timing of everything falling into such closeness, after 21 years of the brand being gone, is just too much to be coincidence, the League is doing all of this by design, I think some real big news is just right around the corner.

The Hartford Whalers are back on the front page of the Hartford Courant today, something big is going on, a big article devoted to the Whalers, something is definitely going on behind the scenes.

But...but...if the Hurricanes really wanted to make $ off of Hartford, why wouldn't they use the universally beloved Wolf Pack brand? Hahahaha

Who would've thought that switching from arguably the greatest uniform in sports, to a logo that looks like it was drawn with a Spirograph by a drunken orangutan, wouldn't pan out?

Just the thought of Karmanos **ming over this is worth seeing that team wear them.

They had a "Pack the lower bowl" promotion on Tuesday spearheaded by Dundon and this was the result

From what I am hearing from people I know inside the XL Center, even if I was to start writing a book today - by the time the book hits the editors and printers and gets released, the team will already be here, that is how fast things are happening behind the scenes in regards to bringing the Whalers back.  I am expecting big news to be released in either June, or else September, those are the two key times.

You are expecting big news in either June, or else September? Why so long for big news? Wasn't it you who wrote:

PRESS CONFERENCE IN OTTAWA TOMORROW, THURSDAY, January 25

boys, this is big

What happened to "big" announcement up in Ottawa 10 days ago? What do the people you know inside XL Center tell you about the "big" Ottawa announcement that happened on January 25? What did that have to do with Hartford? Was it a good announcement for Hartford?
