We are now able to connect faces to deep-pocket Hartford sports investors

Recommended Posts

We have known for years that there are many investors with deep pockets who are willing to bring big name sports teams to Hartford, that they are in constant contact with the Governor, and we know that Data Mail in Newington has been registering names for teams, and we can now connect the dots, thanks to the Hartford Business Journal.

We now have some of the big names in the region, we know who the Deep Pockets are, the key players, the rainmakers, the investors, the guys willing to put their money on the line to support Hartford.  There is something really big going on, too much just is happening all at once for it to be brushed off as a coincidence, there is something really big going on behind the scenes.

While I agree there is too much happening at one time for this to be a coincidence...I am not sure these guys have anything to do with hockey.

The Mandells and Data-Mail work with tens of millions of dollars. That's not going to cut it when you need hundreds of millions to fix the XL Center, hundreds of millions of dollars to buy a NHL team or get an expansion team, hundreds of millions of dollars to bail out Hartford, and billions of dollars to bail out the state. Get a freaking clue before you post something. These guys were barely picked to put a team at Dillon Stadium, I doubt the NHL would be excited to see them as the only potential owners of a NHL franchise in Hartford.

John, I want you to get a grip man, the year 2014 was not the "distant past."   For the past 21 years, we haven't had a pot to piss in as far as the NHL goes and we have a guy trying his best to get something going in the soccer world and this is what you guys have to discuss, support the cause and quit nit picking over the small stuff like a bunch of grumpy old seniors, we've had nothing better in the past 20 years...GET OFF IT AND LETS SUPPORT SOCCER AND HOCKEY IN HARTFORD, PERIOD.

Everything is happening all at once right now for a reason.

There is something really big going on in Hartford, everything is happening all at once, such as the following things which have all happened in the past few months:

  1. new baseball stadium that opened recently
  2. new soccer stadium coming
  3. new soccer team coming
  4. State approves $40 million for XL Center
  5. recently mentioned that XL Center going up for sale this year
  6. new Travel Center opening in next 3 months
  7. new restaurant recently opened at XL Center
  8. Aetna decided to keep Headquarters in Hartford
  9. last year, Governor and Mayor ask Islanders to move here
  10. new UConn campus recently opened in Hartford
  11. DMV will be handing out new Whalers license plates very soon
  12. Jeff Jacobs, who was at Courant for decades, jumps overnight to 8 local newspapers
  13. XL Center starts partnership with Lyft
  14. East Hartford outlet construction suddenly and strangely halted construction, days after official Ground Breaking
  15. popular Busway going to be added to East of river
  16. new casino in East Windsor, after movie theatre sat vacant there for 15 years
  17. My-TV 9 makes deal to air UConn Hockey games
  18. Hurricanes decide to start wearing Whalers jerseys during game
  19. Governor Malloy proposes another $100 Million for the XL Center
  20. The Eagles, biggest American band of the 20th Century, schedules XL Center date
  21. Journey is starting their World Tour in Hartford at the XL Center
  22. Whaler/Hurricanes announcer has his daughter appear on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire"

What are you talking about? We've had a hockey team in Hartford for 21 years. We've had Hartford Hockey Nights, Whalers Nights, raised Whalers banners, a baseball team that honorss the Whale (although I wish they'd also honor the rest of Hartford Sports the same), UConn hockey is in Hartford and uses BB as their goal song, but I doubt you've gone to any of that stuff. You sound like one of the morons that claims to care about Hartford but hasn't been inside the XL Center for a game let alone stepped foot in the city since the Whalers left.

Oh my goodness, here we go again.

Such as who?  The Pack?  Why are they going to "honor" the Pack.

They don't do anything for any of the past baseball teams that have played in Hartford at all. They have one picture on the wall and that's it. Hartford had baseball for 70 years and they barely even mention it. When the team was moving to Hartford they had guys wearing Hartford Chiefs and Hartford Senators uniforms but there's been nothing since then. They even said they'd be doing stuff to honor all of Hartford's Sports History but have stopped at the Whalers. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but I'd like to see more of that than a Whirly Birds Night or a night where they change their name to the Steamed Cheeseburgers.

Well...OK, that's true (you're not 0-fer anymore, congrats!).  But, in defense of the YG, I think the first season was more about re-establishing themselves, getting people into the park, etc.  Over time, I'd like to think that they would do something to honor Hartford's baseball past.

They're doing nothing this year. They just released the promotion schedule and there's nothing about a Dark Blues Night. They even announced the new jerseys they will be wearing this year and they include a Steamed Cheeseburgers Jersey, a Whirly Birds Jersey for "What if" Night, a Whalers style jersey, and a new green "Goats" Jersey. That's it. Honestly, how hard would it be for them to just wear a blue or white jersey with Hartford written on it? But no let's call them the "Los Chivos de Hartford" instead for three "Spanish Nights". That doesn't even translate to Hartford Yard Goats, it only translates to Hartford Goats. They already have forgotten what they're named after and where the script for their wordmark came from. It's not the farm but it's the train yard. If they wanted to go by their "Spanish name" then they should have actually looked it up, instead they probably just used an online translator.

Tell me, Oh Great Fraud of Hartford, do the WolfPack have "Spanish nights"?  Does the WolfPack honor THEIR past by using some of their past names (hint: One of them was the Binghamton Whalers)  I do agree that they should honor the baseball teams of Hartford's past...but to nitpick over their Spanish name, or the fact they're going to be the "Steamed Burgers" or the "Whirly Birds" for one night is nitpicking in it's highest form...even by your standards.
